An interview with Nic Clear from the Ballardian

Posted by voidmanufacturing on December 11, 2009

Here is an interview with architect/theorist/educator/etc Nic Clear concerning ‘The Near Future’, the issue of Architectural Design guest-edited by Nic. The interview covers a number of topics including the relationship of J. G. Ballard’s work to architecture. On the Ballardian site are included videos made by some of Nic’s students (www.ballardian .com, this is a very good resource for anyone interested in Ballard). We here have replaced the videos with images of some of the more ridiculous projects proposed in Dubai… the oasis of idiocy.

For example this classic:

“A journey. A saga. A legend. The World is today’s great development epic. An engineering odyssey to create an island paradise of sea, sand and sky, a destination has arrived that allows investors to chart their own course and make the world their own”… a vision realized… an ecosystem eliminated

In recognition of the sophistication of Ballard’s architectural analysis, a raft of discourse has been produced in recent times from within both academic and pop-cultural realms. This takes the form of tributes, analyses, ‘reimaginings’ and course syllabuses. In the influential architecture blog BLDGBLOG, for example, Geoff Manaugh sounds the note:

We have more to learn from the fiction of J.G. Ballard … than we do from Le Corbusier. The good city form of tomorrow is a refugee camp built by Brown & Root; the world’s largest architectural client is the U.S. Department of Defense. More people now live in overseas military camps than in houses designed by Mies van der Rohe — yet we study Mies van der Rohe. Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Taibbi: “Mad Dog Palin”

Mad Dog Palin

I’m standing outside the XCEL ENERGY CENTER in St. Paul Minnesota Sarah Palin has just finished her speech to the Republican National Convention, accepting the party’s nomination for vice president. If I hadn’t quit my two-packs-a-day habit earlier this year, I’d be chain-smoking now. So the only thing left is to stand mute against the fit-for-a-cheap-dog-kennel crowd-control fencing you see everywhere at these idiotic conventions and gnaw on weird new feelings of shock and anarchist rage as one would a rawhide chew toy. Goldman Sachs Socialism

September 23, 2008

Wall Street put a gun to the head of the politicians and said, Give us the money–right now–or take the blame for whatever follows. The audacity of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s bailout proposal is reflected in what it refuses to say: no explanations of how the bailout will work, no demands on the bankers in exchange for the public’s money. The Treasury’s opaque, three-page summary of plan includes this chilling statement: Read the rest of this entry »

Homeland Security Detects Terrorist Threats by Reading Your Mind

Posted by voidmanufacturing on September 23, 2008

Tuesday , September 23, 2008

By Allison Barrie

Baggage searches are SOOOOOO early-21st century. Homeland Security is now testing the next generation of security screening — a body scanner that can read your mind.

Most preventive screening looks for explosives or metals that pose a threat. But a new system called MALINTENT turns the old school approach on its head. This Orwellian-sounding machine detects the person — not the device — set to wreak havoc and terror.

Naomi Klein: Free market ideology is far from finished

Posted by voidmanufacturing on September 23, 2008

                     \

Whatever the events of this week mean, nobody should believe the overblown claims that the market crisis signals the death of “free market” ideology. Free market ideology has always been a servant to the interests of capital, and its presence ebbs and flows depending on its usefulness to those interests.

During boom times, it’s profitable to preach laissez faire, because an absentee government allows speculative bubbles to inflate. When those bubbles burst, the ideology becomes a hindrance, and it goes dormant while big government rides to the rescue. But rest assured: the ideology will come roaring back when the bailouts are done. The massive debts the public is accumulating to bail out the speculators will then become part of a global budget crisis that will be the rationalization for deep cuts to social programs, and for a renewed push to privatize what is left of the public sector. We will also be told that our hopes for a green future are, sadly, too costly. Read the rest of this entry »

Alain Badiou: Elections, The State, Sarkozy, Communism, and Courage

Posted by voidmanufacturing on September 5, 2008

new left review 49 jan feb 2008 29

Alain Badiou

THE COMMUNIST HYPOTHESIS

There was a tangible sense of depression in the air in France

in the aftermath of Sarkozy’s victory.1 It is often said that

unexpected blows are the worst, but expected ones some-

times prove debilitating in a different way. It can be oddly

dispiriting when an election is won by the candidate who has led in the

opinion polls from the start, just as when the favourite horse wins the

race; anyone with the slightest feeling for a wager, a risk, an exception or

a rupture would rather see an outsider upset the odds. Yet it could hardly

have been the bare fact of Nicolas Sarkozy as President that seemed to

come as such a disorientating blow to the French left in the aftermath

of May 2007. Something else was at stake—some complex of factors for

which ‘Sarkozy’ is merely a name. How should it be understood?

An initial factor was the way in which the outcome affirmed the mani-

fest powerlessness of any genuinely emancipatory programme within

the electoral system: preferences are duly recorded, in the passive man-

ner of a seismograph, but the process is one that by its nature excludes

any embodiments of dissenting political will. Read the rest of this entry »

Elisee Reclus on the murder of animals

Posted by voidmanufacturing on August 24, 2008

First printed in the HUMANE REVIEW, January, 1901.

Reprinted as pamphlet several times, most recently by CGH Services, c.1992 and Jura Media, 1996

MEN of such high standing in hygiene and biology having made a profound study of questions relating to normal food, I shall take good care not to display my incompetence by expressing an opinion as to animal and vegetable nourishment. Let the cobbler stick to his last. As I am neither chemist nor doctor, I shall not mention either azote or albumen, nor reproduce the formulas of analysts, but shall content myself simply with giving my own personal impressions, which, at all events, coincide with those of many vegetarians. I shall move within the circle of my own experiences, stopping here and there to set down some observation suggested by the petty incidents of life. Read the rest of this entry »

Catastrophic Global Warming Provides Amazing New Design Challenges For Architects …Or… Wingnut Makes Drawings Of Floating Concentration Camps

A Floating Ecopolis for Ecological Refugees

It’s common knowledge that the planet is warming, ice caps are melting, and water levels are rising. The international scientific community predicts that a temperature elevation of 1°C will lead to a water rise of 1 meter, resulting in massive land loss and the displacement of millions of people world wide. Vincent Callebaut, a visionary Belgian architect, is responding to this inevitability with his proposal LILYPAD, A Floating Ecopolis for Ecological Refugees. Read the rest of this entry »

Some Arthur Schopenhauer – The Architect of Gloom.

Posted by voidmanufacturing on August 14, 2008

Compared to the bleakness of scientists stealing brains from rat fetuses and placing them in robots, I felt that Schopenhauer’s grim musings would be gleeful.

“There are only pessimists and liars”-Paul Virilio

“The truth is ugly.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Arthur Schopenhauer

Studies in Pessimism

ON THE SUFFERINGS OF THE WORLD.

Unless suffering is the direct and immediate object of life, our existence must entirely fail of its aim. It is absurd to look upon the enormous amount of pain that abounds everywhere in the world, and originates in needs and necessities inseparable from life itself, as serving no purpose at all and the result of mere chance. Each separate misfortune, as it comes, seems, no doubt, to be something exceptional; but misfortune in general is the rule. Read the rest of this entry »

Caring for our elders…the new fashioned way!

Posted by voidmanufacturing on August 3, 2008

“Here comes a robot called uBOT-5 developed by a group of researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to take care of the elderly people, in place of a human medical care giver. This robot has been designed similar to the human anatomy with the sense of vision and touch. This robot can intimate the Baby Boomers, the time for taking medicines and when to do grocery shopping.

uBOT-5 has the ability to track the movement of the elders, sense and intimate the remote medical technician if they fall down or if no movement is recognized from the old people. The robot has also been designed to converse with the elders so that they would not feel lonely.

The uBOT-5 also has the ability to recognize outsiders or parcels blocking its path. In fact, it can lift about 2.2 pounds and carry to another place, the researchers say. The uBOT-5 carries a Web cam, a microphone, and a touch-sensitive LCD display so that it acts as interface for communicating with the outside world.”

“Boy, how awesome is it going to be when I am being touched, watched, and reminded to take drugs by this charmer!”

“Who needs people when you have this adorable automaton for interfacing with the outside world.”

“I can’t wait until I am old and can no longer take care of myself so I can have a 24/7 surveillance drone buzzing around my domicile keeping an eye on me so nothing unexpected (death?) disrupts my expensive prescription drug regiment…”

“what could possibly go wrong?”

From the nation that has brought us the butter pen, umbrella tube, and eye-drop funnels comes a lovely old person washing machine, just throw your dirty and troublesome wrinkle-bag in this gizmo, set the appropriate wash cycle and hit the start button, in just a jiffy you have one sparkling clean elder. The future looks bright and clean for these technophile old farts.

The folks around here are eagerly looking forward to a future with absolutely no human contact. Here is an image of woman sexually interfacing with a lover (client?) using communications technology and remotely  controlled, robotic, sex-machines… With those flexible lighting solutions and the variety of camera angles provided by the documentary film crew, it is just like being there and operating the machines in person… now that is hot.
