Zizek on the upcoming US election

Through the Glasses Darkly

What if the between-the-lines Republican message (don’t be afraid, there will be no real change) is the true illusion?

By SLAVOJ ZIZEK

Today, even the strongest advocates of diminishing the excessive role of Washington accept the necessity of a state intervention that is sublime in its unimaginable quantity.

When the hero of John Carpenter’s 1988 They Live puts on a pair of weird sunglasses that he has stumbled upon in an abandoned church, he notices a billboard that once invited us to a Hawaii beach holiday now simply displays the words:

“MARRY AND REPRODUCE.” Ad copy on another billboard — this one for a new color TV — says, “DON’T THINK, CONSUME!”

The glasses, then, function as a device for the critique of ideology. In other words, they enable him to see the real message lying beneath the glossy, colorful surface.

What would we see if we were to observe the Republican presidential campaign through such glasses? The first thing would be a long series of contradictions and inconsistencies: Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Taibbi: “Mad Dog Palin”

Mad Dog Palin

I’m standing outside the XCEL ENERGY CENTER in St. Paul Minnesota Sarah Palin has just finished her speech to the Republican National Convention, accepting the party’s nomination for vice president. If I hadn’t quit my two-packs-a-day habit earlier this year, I’d be chain-smoking now. So the only thing left is to stand mute against the fit-for-a-cheap-dog-kennel crowd-control fencing you see everywhere at these idiotic conventions and gnaw on weird new feelings of shock and anarchist rage as one would a rawhide chew toy. The 700 Billion Dollar Question… THAT THESE ASSHOLES NEED TO FUCKING ANSWER

THIS IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT!

Using the shock doctrine, Wall Street and Washington’s wrecking crew aim to get the most expensive free lunch in American history

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson details what he called “a comprehensive approach” to repairing financial markets on Friday, Sept. 19. (Hold on to your wallet.)

If a museum in the next superpower nation ever commemorates the decline of the last great superpower, it will make the two-and-a-half page bill introduced this week the center of the display.

Just as they do today at the National Archives’ Declaration of Independence exhibit, tourists in the future—perhaps in Beijing, perhaps somewhere else—will line up to see a framed draft of this week’s White House legislation demanding Congress surrender its power of the purse, and give an unelected appointee—in this case, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson—the power to hand over $700 billion of taxpayer money to “any financial institution,” “without limitation…on such terms and conditions as determined by [him].” In a nation priding itself on separating powers between the branches of government, the bill explicitly states that decisions by Paulson may not even “be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.” Read the rest of this entry »

Alain Badiou: Elections, The State, Sarkozy, Communism, and Courage

Posted by voidmanufacturing on September 5, 2008

new left review 49 jan feb 2008 29

Alain Badiou

THE COMMUNIST HYPOTHESIS

There was a tangible sense of depression in the air in France

in the aftermath of Sarkozy’s victory.1 It is often said that

unexpected blows are the worst, but expected ones some-

times prove debilitating in a different way. It can be oddly

dispiriting when an election is won by the candidate who has led in the

opinion polls from the start, just as when the favourite horse wins the

race; anyone with the slightest feeling for a wager, a risk, an exception or

a rupture would rather see an outsider upset the odds. Yet it could hardly

have been the bare fact of Nicolas Sarkozy as President that seemed to

come as such a disorientating blow to the French left in the aftermath

of May 2007. Something else was at stake—some complex of factors for

which ‘Sarkozy’ is merely a name. How should it be understood?

An initial factor was the way in which the outcome affirmed the mani-

fest powerlessness of any genuinely emancipatory programme within

the electoral system: preferences are duly recorded, in the passive man-

ner of a seismograph, but the process is one that by its nature excludes

any embodiments of dissenting political will. Read the rest of this entry »

Navigating Movements: an interview with Brian Massumi, Delueze scholar and expert in forms of social control

Posted by voidmanufacturing on August 16, 2008

NAVIGATING MOVEMENTS

When you walk, each step is the body’s movement against falling — each

movement is felt in our potential for freedom as we move with the earth’s

gravitational pull. When we navigate our way through the world, there are

different pulls, constraints and freedoms that move us forward and propel us

into life. But in the changing face of capitalism, media information and

technologies — which circulate the globe in more virtual and less obvious ways

— how do the constraints on freedom involve our affective and embodied

dimensions of experience? That is, how do we come to feel and respond to

life and reality itself when new virtualised forms of power mark our every

step, when the media and political activity continually feed on our

insecurities — for instance, when a political leader can deploy overseas troops

to make a country feel safe and secure in the face of ‘terror’. Our beliefs and

hopes can be galvanised for this ‘good’, and as a tool for orchestrating attacks

on ‘evil’ and threats to national security. Against this framework of despair

that enact our relations to the world — violence, terror and the virtual lines

of capital flow — what are the hopes for political intervention?

Philosopher Brian Massumi explores the hopes that lie across these fields of

movement; the potentials for freedom, and the power relations that operate

in the new ‘societies of control’. These are all ethical issues — about the

reality of living, the faith and belief in the world that makes us care for our

belonging to it. Massumi’s diverse writings and philosophical perspectives

radicalise ideas of affect — the experiences and dimensions of living — that

are the force of individual and political reality. His writings are concerned

with the practice of everyday life, and the relations of experience that

engage us in the world, and our ethical practices. He is based in Montreal.

Movements — hope, feeling, affect Read the rest of this entry »

The Banality of Evil

Posted by voidmanufacturing on August 4, 2008

What a way to start the day…the screeching of your Dalek-ian alarm clock accompanied by the smell of sizzling pig corpse, just roll over and shove that scrap of roasted flesh into your crusty morning-breath maw. It only makes sense that such an infernal and stupid device should crafted with a complete lack of artistry by some half-assed carnivore dimwits being ironic.

Pre-bacon existence

This is a really great book.

Pleasurable Kingdomby Jonathan Balcombe

A group of hippopotamuses rests motionless in the cool of an African freshwater spring. Schools of tiny fish have gathered round their flanks and feet, nibbling at parasites and sloughing skin. The hippos, far from passive participants, splay their toes, gape open their mouths and spread their legs to assist the fish in their cleaning services.

Five thousand miles away, in a Montreal lab, an iguana ventures away from her warm perch to retrieve a gourmet tidbit from a frigid corner of her terrarium, ignoring the dull, processed reptile chow just beneath her perch. It’s a reptilian version of shunning the fruit bowl and dashing out for doughnuts on a wintry night.

And in Bowling Green, Ohio, a pair of young rats utter ultrasonic squeaks as they chase a hand to be tickled. Rats accustomed to being petted also approach a hand, but not nearly so quickly, nor with as many squeaks as rats trained to expect a tickle. Read the rest of this entry »
